Congress leader K.C. Venugopal on Thursday said the All India Congress Committee would stand by the action taken by the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committees in connection with the controversy surrounding Palakkad MLA Rahul Mamkootathil.
Speaking to reporters here, he reiterated that the Congress had already clarified its stance on the issue. Mr. Venugopal said no one in the party was being prevented from pursuing any legal remedies.
“What we want is an impartial process. Whenever allegations were raised against a public representative, it was the Congress that took exemplary action. The email complaint was forwarded directly to the KPCC president, who in turn referred it to the State Police Chief. We did not attempt to shield anyone,” he said.
He accused the CPI(M) of attempting to divert attention from election-related issues by raking up allegations. “CPI(M) leaders have been arrested in the Sabarimala gold heist case. The Congress has never had a tradition of protecting wrongdoers,” he said. On the matter of Mr. Mamkootathil continuing as MLA, he said the onus was on the legislator himself.
The senior Congress leader also alleged a covert understanding between the CPI(M) and the Bharatiya Janata Party on national policies, including the PM SHRI scheme and Labour Codes.
Responding to the controversy involving CPI(M) MP John Brittas, he said the Union Education Minister had said that Mr. Brittas served as the link between the Centre and Kerala government on matters related to PM SHRI . “If Mr. Brittas had no involvement as intermediary, is he prepared to issue a notice against the Minister for violating his privileges,” Mr. Venugopal asked.
