The District Fast Track Mahila Court at the Combined Court Complex here convicted history-sheeter K. Hemaraj and sentenced him to 10 years of imprisonment in connection with snacting a mobile phone from a woman passenger and reportedly misbehaving with her in a moving train near Katpadi in Vellore in November 2022.

Judge R. Gokulakrishnan delivered the verdict, sentencing Hemaraj to imprisonment with a fine of ₹1.1 lakh. The Judge has examined 20 witnesses and found Hemaraj guilty. The court order also said that if the fine amount is not paid, the accused would have to serve three more months of imprisonment.

The Government Railway Police (GRP) police said that on November 22, 2002, the survivor was travelling from Ambattur to Vellore town in Arakkonam-Vellore Cantonment MEMU Express train when Hemaraj asked for her mobile phone. As she refused to give her phone, he forcibly snatched the device and reportedly misbehaved with her.

Police said that when the train slowed near the Vellore Town railway station, Hemaraj suddenly pushed the woman out of the coach and fled. Later, she was rescued and admitted to the hospital.

Based on a complaint filed by the woman, a case was registered at the Katpadi GRP including under Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment Against Women (TNPHW) Act. Police said that Hemaraj is currently serving rigorous life imprisonment at the Central Prison in Vellore in connection with another case in which he pushed a pregnant woman off a moving train near Katpadi when she resisted his attempt to sexually assault her in February, 2024.
