A day after a woman was shot dead in Haryana’s Rohtak allegedly by her brother and his accomplices for marrying against the family’s wishes, the Haryana Police have arrested four accused in the case after a brief encounter.
Four pistols and ten cartridges have been seized from the possession of the accused, identified as Sanju, Rahul, Ankit and Gaurav, said the police.
Sapna, 23, a resident of Rohtak’s Kahni village, had married a youth, Suraj, from her own caste, but the same village against the wishes of her family three years ago. On November 20, Sapna’s brother Sanju along with his friends allegedly shot the woman while she was sleeping in her room and her brother-in-law Sahil, when he tried to intervene. Sapna died on the spot and Sahil is under treatment at Post-graduate Institute of Medical Sciences in Rohtak.
Acting on a tip-off, a Crime Branch team of Rohtak Police tried to flag down the four young men on a motorcycle on Ladhot-Bohar road, but the accused allegedly opened fire at the police team in a bid to escape. The police also returned the fire injuring the accused and arrested them.
While Sanju and Rahul belong to Kahni village, the remaining two accused, Ankit and Gaurav, are residents of Rukhi village in Sonipat.
The police said the four were planning to murder Sapna’s husband Sahil, an auto-rickshaw driver.
The couple had left the village to live on rent in Rohtak city after the marriage, but returned a few months ago as they found it difficult to make both ends meet leading to renewed tensions between the two families.
