Hostel kitchen of Virudhunagar school closed for violating food safety rules

Food Safety officials have ordered closure of the hostel kitchen of a private school in Soolakkarai for distributing snacks and beverages without food safety license, to school students, on Saturday.

A team of officials, led by District Designated Officer S. Mariappan found that the students were given rose milk, badam milk, tea, coffee and snacks which did not have food safety license.

Besides, sugar rock candy, cashew nuts without labels and tea dust which was not permitted for sale, biscuits, all weighing 69 kg, were seized.

The school administration also did not possess the lab report of the water used for cooking purpose and the cooks did not have medical certificate for being free of any contagious disease.

The officials also found that pest control measures were not installed in the kitchen. The kitchen was maintained in an unhygienic condition and sewage management was not properly done.

Besides, the school administration has been prohibited to cook food on its premises and has also been asked not to serve food brought from outside to the students.

The administration has been asked to set right all the lacunae by seven days.
