The district administration in Mysuru offered tributes to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar on his 69th Mahaparinirvana Day on December 6.
They made floral offerings to Ambedkar’s statue at the Town Hall premises. The event was organised by the Mysuru district administration, Zilla Panchayat, Department of Social Welfare, and the Mysuru City Corporation.
Tanveer Sait, Narasimharaja MLA, said Ambedkar’s ideals and personality continue to inspire people as he espoused the cause of equality for all sections of society. This was enshrined in the Constitution.
The Karnataka government is ensuring that the Constitution’s principles are taught at schools, colleges, meetings and public programmes, added Mr. Sait.
Referring to the non-completion of Ambedkar Bhavan in Mysuru though the work started more than 15 years ago, Mr. Sait expressed hope that it would be completed and inaugurated soon.
K. Harish Gowda, Chamaraja MLA, said 140 crore Indians follow the ideals and values in the Constitution given by Ambedkar.
Speaking at the event, Buddhist monk Kalyan Shri Bhanteji of Maha Bodhi Society said that Ambedkar’s thoughts, principles, and the path he followed are invaluable. His values have been accepted by all sections of society and transcend religion and caste barriers, he added.
‘’Ambedkar’s thoughts promote both social and mental well-being and are relevant to society. When we adopt humane, non-sectarian, and non-casteist values in our lives, we become truly enlightened,’’ said Mr. Bhanteji. Just as Buddha’s path is the way that guides everyone irrespective of religion, this is the path Ambedkar offered for the progress and enlightenment of society, he noted. Humanity should be the guiding principle of religion, and only through humanity can the world see everyone as human, he added.
The monk further said that although Ambedkar is not physically present today, he shines as a beacon of equality and a symbol of knowledge across the world.
Mr. Bhanteji, Bodhi Ratna Bhanteji, and Buddha Prakash Banteji recited ‘Buddha Vandana’, ‘Dharma Vandana’, and ‘Sangha Vandana’ to mark the occasion.
T.S. Srivatsa, Krishnaraja MLA, G. Lakshmikanth Reddy, Deputy Commissioner, S. Yukesh Kumar, Mysuru Zilla Panchayat CEO, Sheikh Tanveer Asif, Mysuru City Corporation Commissioner, Seema Latkar, Mysuru City Police Commissioner, Bindu Mani, Deputy Commissioner of Police, and others were present.
