The Trinamool Congress on Thursday (December 4, 2025) suspended party MLA Humayun Kabir who had given a call for constructing ‘Babri Masjid’ on December 6 in the State’s Murshidabad district.

Mr. Kabir, an MLA from Bharatpur was suspended by the disciplinary committee of the party for anti-party activities, Trinamool Congress leader and State’s Minister Firhad Hakim said.

“He stays in Rejinagar and is an MLA from Bharatpur. Why then does he want to build a mosque at Beldanga? This is because Beldanga is communally sensitive and if their are riots, it will result in polarisation and help the BJP,” Mr. Hakim said.

The MLA’s suspension comes on the day Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is visiting Murshidabad district. Mr. Hakim said that the Trinamool Congress will not keep in touch with anyone who indulges in communal politics. The party had cautioned Mr. Kabir on three occasions, but he failed to heed the warning, prompting the disciplinary action, he further added.

Responding to his suspension, Mr. Kabir said that he will resign as an MLA and announce his own party in Murshidabad on December 22. “I will contest against the BJP and the Trinamool both,” he said.

The MLA said that there will be no change in his plans of constructing ‘Babri Masjid’. Mr. Kabir’s repeated claims of setting up a ‘Babri Masjid’ was turning out to be an embarrassment for the West Bengal’s ruling party. The remarks had given a handle for the BJP to target the Trinamool Congress. West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose has also sought action against the MLA for making communally charged statements.

Murshidabad witnessed communal riots in April 2025 over the Waqf (Amendment) Bill which left three persons dead and hundreds homeless. Mr. Kabir has made several communally charged statements in the past too.

It’s interesting to note that Mr. Kabir was suspended from TMC for six years in 2015 for anti-party activities. He joined the BJP in 2018, contesting the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from the Murshidabad constituency. He later rejoined the Trinamool in 2021.
