The Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital (KMCH) has installed a Hybrid Neurosurgical Operating Theatre to facilitate high-end neurosurgical procedures, and endovascular neurointerventions.

A press release said the hospital had performed endovascular coiling for patients with complex conditions in the brain.

“This Hybrid Neurosurgical OT at KMCH is one of its kind in the government sector in the country. It is both for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. A total of seven patients (three for therapeutic and four for diagnostic) were treated for various conditions including aneurysm, tumour and stroke. Usually, these procedures are done by opening the skull. Patients will have to be in hospital for several weeks and the recovery period is long. This OT has made minimally invasive procedures possible, and the recovery period is shorter. In fact, CT scans can be done on the table, M. Kavitha, dean of KMCH, said.

These procedures would otherwise have been done by opening the skull, accessing the deeper areas and placing large metallic clips permanently in the brain. In minimally invasive procedures, there is no need to open the skull, no handling of blood vessels, and facilitates quick recovery, the release added.

The procedures were performed with the help of neurologist Shakir Husain Hakim and the Stroke and Neuro-intervention Foundation (SNIF).

KMCH has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with SNIF to facilitate such procedures and train faculty and students of KMCH.

As a part of Directorate of Medical Education and Research Diamond Jubilee celebrations, neurosurgical operations as well as a teaching workshop was organised at KMCH on November 21 and 22.

Kodeeswaran M., head, Department of Neurosurgery, KMCH; M. Radha, head, Department of Neurology, KMCH; and Goutham S. P., faculty, SNIF, were present.
