The Indian Institute of Interior Designers is pursuing with the government the possibility of regulating the sector through an Act.
Jignesh Modi, its president, who was in Coimbatore to participate in the installation function of the office- bearers of the Coimbatore chapter of the Institute, told The Hindu that about 50 % of its members are associate members who are qualified interior designers. “We want an Act so that members to the council can be enrolled based on their educational qualification in interior designing,” he said.
“At least four of the top 10 growing cities in the world are in India. We are looking at the next 50 years. Interior designing is now an unregulated profession. The government feels anyone can do the interiors. We feel education should be made into a qualification. We want to convince the government,” he said.
The Institute plans to submit a report to the government in this regard by mid – January based on inputs and discussions with countries that have a regulation for interior designers, Mr. Modi said.
