Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras, have developed and deployed a Vessel Traffic Management System for ports at the Vizhinjam International Seaport Limited and are in discussion with two other ports on the western coast for deployment.

The indigenous system, developed fully by National Technology Centre for Ports, Waterways and Coasts (NTCPWC), offers the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, a full and strategic control over source code, databases, and aspects of the solution. K. Murali, Head, NTCPWC, was quoted in a press release stating that it eliminated the risk of leak of strategically important data on movement of vessels.

The system was scalable to accommodate deployment in more ports with enhanced capacity and reduced dependence on private vendors or foreign solution providers, the release added.
