A tense situation prevailed among passengers at the Chennai airport on Thursday after IndiGo Airlines cancelled several of their flights, delaying the departure of other airlines.
Of the over 100 IndiGo flights cancelled across the country, 26 were set to depart from the Chennai airport to various destinations, including Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Guwahati, Bhubaneswar, Kochi, Patna, the Andaman Islands, Delhi, Coimbatore, Shirdi, and Colombo in Sri Lanka.
Similarly, five flights scheduled to arrive from Mumbai, Andaman, Indore, Jaipur, and Kochi were cancelled.
Those arriving on connecting IndiGo flights also faced the problem.
Hundreds of passengers argued with the security staff at the domestic terminal, and raised slogans calling out the inaction of the private airline and the officials of the Airports Authority of India (AAI).
They thronged the IndiGo ticket counters to request a refund for their tickets or to book an alternative flight as they waited for news about the status of their flights.
According to Ketan Rajdev, a resident of Ahmedabad, his flight was rescheduled on Thursday morning. When he reached the airport, he was told that the flight was cancelled. However, the airline staff remained clueless about its schedule.
AAI officials said that IndiGo had been communicating with passengers well in advance about the cancellation of flights. “Every 15 minutes, they update passengers about the flight delays. There is no issue at the terminal,” an official said.
