With the State government aiming to distribute 65 lakh sarees in the first phase to rural women by December 9, the Indiramma saree distribution drive is under way across Telangana and seeing an overwhelming response. Ministers, Congress MLAs, MPs and other public representatives from various districts are taking part in the programme.

On Sunday, Transport and BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar distributed sarees to women in the Husnabad constituency, while Health Minister C. Damodar Raja Narasimha participated in the event in Sangareddy town.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Prabhakar said the sarees, woven by Sircilla weavers, are being distributed to all women above 18 years under the leadership of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy. He encouraged women to take part in the programme and wear the sarees as a symbol of dignity and empowerment.

In Sangareddy, Mr. Raja Narasimha said the “people’s government” is committed to supporting women’s development across sectors. “The government has disbursed loans worth Rs. 590 crore to SHG women in the district and distributed Rs. 32 crore interest subsidy,” he said, adding that the State government is striving to empower women through the Indira Mahila Shakti scheme.

“The government is encouraging women SHGs in various businesses such as solar plants, Mahila Shakti canteens, petrol pumps and purchase of buses,” he added.

Telangana Innovation Cell chairperson Nirmala Jaggareddy said the government is implementing various welfare programmes for women through Indira Mahila Shakti, and that women should take advantage of them and develop economically.
