The third vessel of the Survey Vessel Large (SVL) class, INS Ikshak, was commissioned into the Indian Navy at a ceremonial event held at Naval Base in Kochi on Thursday (November 6, 2025).

The ceremony was presided over by Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff. Senior naval officers, veterans, representatives from Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), and distinguished dignitaries attended the event.

The Navy informed that the commissioning marks a significant step in strengthening India’s hydrographic survey and maritime operational capabilities. On arrival at the venue, the Navy chief was accorded a 50-men guard of honour.

The ceremony began with the reading of the Commissioning Warrant by Captain Tribhuvan Singh, the Commanding Officer. This was followed by the hoisting of the Naval Ensign and Commissioning Pennant, accompanied by the national anthem and ceremonial salute. The Commissioning Plaque was unveiled by the Admiral Tripathi.

In his address, the Navy chief described INS Ikshak as a symbol of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’, highlighting the strong collaboration between the Navy, domestic industry, and MSMEs. The ship is equipped with advanced hydrographic and oceanographic systems, and is capable of operating as a survey vessel as well as a platform for humanitarian assistance, disaster relief and medical support operations.

He highlighted the ship’s pivotal role in advancing India’s maritime interests and strategic reach. It is poised to chart uncharted waters, enhance maritime safety, and reinforce national security across vital sea lanes.

INS Ikshak is also the first SVL designed with dedicated women’s accommodation, reflecting the Navy’s commitment to inclusivity and modernisation. Its induction is expected to substantially enhance the nation’s maritime safety and strategic presence across key sea lanes.

Following the ceremony, the Navy chief toured the ship and interacted with the crew and GRSE officials, commending their dedication and contribution to the ship’s successful induction.

INS Ikshak is now set to begin operational deployment and reinforce national maritime interests.
