Farmers’ associations have raked up issues faced by ryots in getting their ‘samba/thaladi’ paddy crop insured during the current ‘rabi’ season and sought remedial measures from the government.
While the Coordination Committee of All Farmers Associations of Tamil Nadu claimed that the timing of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls has stymied the crop insurance application process, the Tamil Nadu Cauvery Farmers Protection Association (TNCFPA) listed out various issues such as non-issuance of correct cultivation certificate by the village administrative officers, collection of ‘extra’ charges for uploading of documents and others.
Stating that the inept handling of ‘kuruvai’ paddy procurement process had slowed down the nursery raising and transplantation exercises of samba/thaladi crop, the Committee claimed that availing the cultivation certificates from VAOs, an essential document for applying for crop insurance, has turned out to be a time-consuming process in view of the SIR. Hence, the Committee sought an extension of the deadline for applying for crop insurance by another fortnight from November 15.
Mean time, the TNCFPA has exhorted the Tamil Nadu government to instruct the VAOs to issue cultivation certificates to those who have raised the nursery for transplantation since the insurance companies demand such certificates only and not the certification that the nursery had been ‘raised for transplantation’ as issued by some VAOs, who have been deployed in SIR exercise.
Urging the government to extend the deadline for crop insurance by another 30 days from November 15, the association alleged that hefty charges were being levied at the e-Service centres where the farmers approach to get the documents uploaded along with their application for crop insurance.
