A robbery was reported on Monday in Elephant Gate area, where unidentified men attacked a jewellery unit owner and escaped with 100 sovereigns of gold jewellery worth nearly ₹80 lakh, said police.
Jagadees, a native of Rajasthan, lives with his family on Nattupillaiyar Koil Street. He runs a gold jewellery unit on Venkatrayan Street, Elephant Gate. Last night, he was at his shop when two unidentified men arrived, claiming they wanted to buy jewellery. Believing them to be customers, he showed them some ornaments.
Police said suddenly, the duo grabbed a bottle nearby and hit Jagadees on the head. After he suffered a severe head injury, the assailants tied him to a chair. They then looted around 800 grams (100 sovereigns) of gold jewellery worth about ₹80 lakh and fled. To avoid being caught, they smashed the CCTV cameras installed in the shop and also took away the DVR that recorded the footage.
A short while later, Jagadees’s relative came to the shop and was shocked to find him tied up and bleeding profusely. He immediately rescued him and rushed him to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital for treatment.
On receiving information, Elephant Gate police and fingerprint experts inspected the unit, examining the scattered items and searching for clues. Since the DVR was stolen, police have begun reviewing CCTV footage from nearby buildings and roads.
