The Jawaharlal Nehru University was abuzz on Sunday ahead of the JNU Students’ Union polls on Tuesday. The presidential debate, which is a cornerstone of the elections, was delayed by a few hours due to “unforeseen circumstances” and was conducted late on Sunday night.
The Election Committee (EC) in a statement said that the debate was postponed from 8 p.m. to 11.30 p.m. on Sunday due to “unforeseen circumstances”. “All the Candidates contesting for the post of president ha unanimously agreed to the postponement of the Presidential Debate and ensure their cooperation with the Election Committee for the smooth conduct of the presidential debate.”
According to sources, the debate was postponed due to a family emergency with one of the candidates, following which, all the other candidates agreed to delay it in the spirit of a free and fair election process. The EC’s note was signed by all seven candidates.
This year, seven candidates are in the fray for the post of JNUSU president, while three candidates are contesting for the post of vice-president and five each for the post of general secretary and joint secretary.
All India Students’ Association (AISA) Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and Democratic Students’ Federation have formed an alliance to ensure that Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) does “not enter the union”. Meanwhile, ABVP is aiming to secure more seats than the previous election. Last time, AISA and DSF’s alliance won three posts whereas ABVP won one post in the central panel.
