“Law students shall be the guardians of the Constitution. They must follow the rules and protect the interests of society and citizens,” III Additional District and Sessions Judge, Kalaburagi, Chennappa Gouda has said.
He was addressing the Samvidhan Divas (Constitution Day) celebrations at Central University of Karnataka on Wednesday. The event was organised in association with the District Legal Services Authority, Kalaburagi.
Speaking on the significance of the Constitution, he quoted B.R. Ambedkar as saying: “The Constitutional remedies enshrined in the Constitution are the heart and soul of the Constitution.”
He observed that the Constitution stands as “the mother of all laws in India” and emphasised that the Judiciary, Legislature and Executive must function strictly within its framework.
He also spoke on the role of the judiciary in evolving the Doctrine of Basic Structure to safeguard the essence of the Constitution.
Senior Civil Judge and secretary of the District Legal Services Authority Srinivas Navale urged law students to cultivate a spirit of social service and “be the voice of the voiceless”.
He said that the purpose of the Constitution is “to avoid discrimination, spread peace and maintain equality”.
Registrar of the university R.R. Biradar said that celebrating Constitution Day is vital for creating legal awareness and “igniting minds to attain Viksit Bharat by 2047”.
Presiding over the function, Vice-Chancellor Battu Satyanarayana said that the Constitution plays a crucial role in “regulating the entropy of the system”.
In a nation of 140 crore people, he said, the absence of rules will lead to disorder. “It is important for all of us to abide by the laws to maintain societal order. Without fulfilling our duties, it is inappropriate to fight for our rights,” he remarked.
Earlier, Dean of the School of Legal Studies Basavaraj M. Kubakaddi delivered the introductory remarks and welcomed the gathering.
Renuka S. Gubbewad, Jayanta Boruah, deans, heads of departments, faculty members and students were present.
