Former AIADMK minister and nine-time MLA K.A. Sengottaiyan on Thursday joined the Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor Vijay. He was expelled from the AIADMK recently.

Mr Sengottaiyan, who arrived at Mr Vijay’s office in Panaiyur with his supporters, has been appointed organisation secretary for four districts: Coimbatore, Erode, Tiruppur and the Nilgiris.

Mr Sengottaiyan, who was first elected to the Assembly when M.G.R. was Chief Minister in 1977, continued to hold various positions in the AIADMK and served as a minister in the cabinets of Jayalalithaa and Edappadi K. Palaniswami.

Mr Sengottaiayn is the first well-known political leader to join the TVK. A well-known organiser, he may help Mr Vijay in organising meeting and enrolling party workers.

Feeling sidelined and not accorded due prominence in the party—despite being senior to Mr Palaniswami—Mr Sengottaiyan resigned his post as MLA. He was elected from the Gobichettipalayam constituency.
