Thoothukudi Lok Sabha member Kanimozhi Karunanidhi on Saturday inaugurated a 220-unit apartment built by Tamil Nadu Urban Housing Development Board (TNUHDB) at a cost of ₹20 crore at Ayyanadaippu village in Thoothukudi block.

Speaking at the event, she said that the houses have been built under the ‘Housing for all’ scheme, on a beneficiary-contribution model.

She added that although the construction began several years ago, it was the Dravidian model of government under Chief Minister M. K. Stalin that helped expedite the completion of the project.

“Accordingly, the construction has been completed and allotment orders have been handed over to the beneficiaries,” she noted.

She further added that the houses were built by the government, but it is the responsibility of the residents to maintain them with a sense of ownership.

Mentioning that each apartment has been constructed at a built-up area of 400 square feet, comprising a drawing room, kitchen, bedroom, toilet and bathroom, the MP pointed out that basic facilities, including tar topped road, drinking water facility, rainwater harvesting system, storm water drain and a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) with a capacity of 1.66 MLD have been also been established.

She further noted that beneficiaries were required to pay ₹1.13 lakh and ₹1 lakh depending on the type of houses.

Thoothukudi Collector K. Elambahavath, Social Welfare and Women Empowerment Minister P. Geetha Jeevan, Ottapidaram MLA M.C. Shunmugaiah, Thoothukudi Corporation Mayor Jegan Periyasamy and other officials were present.
