A Delhi tribunal has awarded ₹36.69 lakh to the family of 20-year-old Anjali Singh, who was killed in a hit-and-run incident in Kanjhawala area in the early hours of January 1, 2023.
She was dragged under a vehicle for around 13 km from Sultanpuri to Kanjhawala before the occupants abandoned her body in a secluded area of Jonti village in Rohini. The gruesome incident sent shock waves across the country and sparked protests.
‘Rashness, negligence’
In its October 27 order, the tribunal found evidence showing “rashness and negligence on the part of the driver of the offending vehicle”. It added that the car’s occupants were “responsible for the accident and for everything that followed”.
The tribunal noted that the driver, Amit Khanna, lacked a valid licence and was under the influence of alcohol. It found him responsible for her death “due to negligence”.
While awarding compensation under various heads, the tribunal said the involvement of the car’s owner, Lokesh Prasad Sharma, was undisputed.
The car was insured by Bajaj Allianz General Insurance Ltd. The tribunal directed the insurer to deposit the amount within 30 days. The decision was made on an appeal filed by the mother, two minor sisters, and a minor brother of the deceased. The family submitted that Anjali was the sole breadwinner.
The victim worked with a party/event management firm in the city.
