Amidst intense tussle over leadership, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and his deputy and Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president D.K. Shivakumar met for breakfast at the former’s residence, Cauvery, on Saturday (November 29) in Bengaluru.

The breakfast meeting was held following the instructions from the Congress high command which telephoned both to hold discussions to resolve their differences.

On Saturday morning around 10 a.m., Mr. Siddaramaiah welcomed Mr. Shivakumar, accompanied by his legal adviser and Congress MLA A.S. Ponnanna.

Soon after the two leaders met, the Chief Minister’s Office released photographs of them having Idilis for the breakfast.

The meeting between two top Congress leaders in Karnataka, which lasted for about 40 minutes, assumes significance as Mr. Siddaramaiah had earlier said that he would continue in the post for the full-five-year term, while also stating that he would finally abide by the high command.

Mr. Shivakumar has been demanding transfer of power to him after the completion of 2.5 year-term of the Congress government on November 20, 2025.

On November 27, Mr. Siddaramaiah and Mr. Shivakumar used social media posts to target each other obliquely on the leadership issue.

On November 28, The Chief Minister reiterated that there was no change in his stand. “I will listen to whatever high command says. He (Mr. Shivakumar) has also said that several times,” Mr Siddaramaiah said.

Dinner meeting earlier

In preparation for the breakfast meeting, sources said loyal MLAs of Mr. Shivakumar met for a “dinner meeting” in the City on Friday night.

The Congress sources said the high command has instructed both leaders to hold a breakfast meeting to control the damage to the government and the party.

As the Winter Session of the State legislature session would commence on December 8 in Belagavi, the meeting between two Congress leaders would also send a message to the rival BJP and JD(S) that all is well in the ruling dispensation. The Winter Session of parliament begins on Monday (December 1).

Breathing time

It is also said the breakfast meeting would give the high command some breathing time to hold talks with the two leaders and buy some time to take firm decisions in the interest of the party.

Meanwhile, loyalists and supporters of Mr. Shivakumar are holding a rally in Mysuru, the home district of the Chief Minister, demanding the top post for their leader.
