The Kerala High Court on Thursday reserved its order on an appeal filed by the Catholic Congress against a single judge’s order to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to grant A-certification for the Malayalam film Haal without deleting some scenes pertaining to the Christian community.

The Catholic Congress had contended that the film portrayed the Thamarassery bishop as a supporter of inter-faith marriages whereas his known stance is otherwise. This is defamatory, hurts religious sentiments of the community, and could disturb peace in society, it said. The organisation also objected to filming of the Bishop’s House from outside without seeking consent.

This was after the court allowed the organisation to implead itself in a petition filed by the filmmakerswho expressed concern at the CBFC’s revision committee seeking the removal of half-a-dozen scenes from the movie.

The organisation said the single judge failed to consider the fact that the statements in the movie that questions the clergy and Christian religious practices infringe the fundamental rights guaranteed under Article 25 and 26 of the Constitution of India.
