Political fronts in the Kalamassery municipality have placed development as a key poll plank in the campaign for the local body polls.

With the civic body having the distinction of being one of the three biggest revenue-grossing municipalities in Ernakulam, the United Democratic Front (UDF) and the Left Democratic Front (LDF) seem confident while making assurances on infrastructure and other development projects.

“The municipality has an annual turnover of ₹17 crore from property tax collection,” pointed out Jamal Manakkadan, former chairperson, thanks to the industrial and commercial status enjoyed by the civic body.

On development plans, Mr. Manakkadan said the Congress-led UDF governance for the past three decades had focussed on ensuring basic infrastructure support across wards. “In the next five years, we will continue to implement the projects undertaken during the past five years. The priority areas will be drinking water and waste management projects,” he said.

The Opposition LDF, which had accused the ruling UDF of not matching the development projects in tune with the impressive revenue earnings of the civic body, said its focus would be on ensuring a corruption-free development pattern.

K.B. Varghese, area committee secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), said the LDF’s manifesto for Kalamassery would chart out the future roadmap. “Kalamassery’s industrial hub status will be enhanced by supporting the projects initiated by the government. Projects aimed at strengthening the infrastructure capabilities of the civic body will be implemented,” he said.
