The K.G. Chavadi police in Coimbatore district found a man hailing from Kerala with ₹40 lakh in unaccounted cash at the inter-State checkpost at Velanthavalam on Friday.
The police said that B. Sudheer, 55, of Koonathara near Vaniyamkulam in Palakkad district was found with the cash during a vehicle check at 6.10 a.m.
According to the police, Sudheer was stopped at the checkpost when he was heading towards Kerala on a scooter. The police found a paper-wrapped bundle kept on the front portion of the two-wheeler. Upon opening the bundle, the police found ₹40 lakh in bundles of ₹500 denomination currencies. The police seized the cash as the man could not produce any valid document to explain the source of the money.
The man, however, stated that it was for works for a jewellery shop at Ottapalam in Palakkad. He claimed that the money was proceeds from the sale of old gold brought from his jewellery, which was sold in Coimbatore.
The police handed over the man and the seized cash to the Income Tax Department for verification and inquiry.
