Kerala is becoming the capital of narcotics, with a variety of drugs being available in every nook and cranny of the State, Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan said here on Tuesday (November 4). He was flagging off the Great Walkathon, marking the culmination of the first phase of a State-wide anti-drug campaign led by senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala.

The Opposition leader said that the inflow of drugs, both through the sea and the land, should be stopped by tracing and plugging the source.

The walkathon, which started from Marine Drive, culminated at Durbar Hall Ground. The Navy and the Coast Guard also joined the event.

Mr. Chennithala said the campaign would be expanded to Assembly constituencies and educational institutions in its second phase soon. “Anti-drug crusaders have to rise from each family. Even our children have been turned into drug carriers. The situation should change,” Mr. Chennithala said. He also administered an anti-drug oath to participants of the event.

T.J. Vinod, MLA, the coordinator of the organising committee, chaired the meet.
