Kasturba Medical College, Mangaluru, has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with BEBIG Medical GmbH, which deals with brachytherapy systems and technologies, to establish a Centre for Advanced Brachytherapy (internal radiation therapy)Trainingat KMC Hospital in Attavar.
Through this partnership, radiation oncologists and physicists from across the world will have the opportunity to undergo structured, hands-on training in advanced brachytherapy procedures. The centre aims to standardise high-quality practice, enhance clinician proficiency, and promote global knowledge exchange in cancer care, a release from KMC Hospital Attavar Oncology Centre said on Monday.
Brachytherapy — also known as internal radiotherapy — is an advanced radiation technique in which a radioactive source is placed directly inside or next to the tumor. This allows delivery of highly targeted radiation to cancerous tissues while protecting nearby healthy organs, enabling better tumor control with fewer side effects, reduced treatment time, and improved patient recovery outcomes. Brachytherapy forms an essential component of treatment for cancers of the cervix, prostate, breast, and selected head and neck tumors.
