Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) has approved an enhancement in the permissible carrying capacity of Ro-Ro (Roll on-Roll off) wagons on the Konkan Railway route from 50 tonnes to 57 tonnes.

The first Ro-Ro service utilising the 57 tonne-capacity wagons will commence from Wednesday, November 5, a KRCL release said on Tuesday.

The enhancement will facilitate the movement of heavier commercial vehicles, enabling greater load flexibility for transporters and improved operational efficiency, it said.

The increased capacity is expected to particularly benefit truckers and industries transporting iron and steel, marble, tiles, construction materials, and other heavy consignments.

Truckers carrying loads above 50 tonnes are advised to contact the booking office at Kolad (9004476090) and Surathkal (9686656159) for booking details and operational assistance, it said.

Konkan Railway’s Ro-Ro services, introduced in January 1999, is a cost-effective freight solution that enables loaded trucks to be transported directly on railway wagons, reducing fuel consumption, driver fatigue, road congestion, and carbon emissions.

This service offers a seamless and efficient logistics alternative to truck movement through the challenging Western Ghats terrain.
