Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd., (KRCL) that is operating Roll-on, Roll-off (Ro Ro) services to transport trucks between Kolad, near Mumbai, and Surathkal, near Mangaluru, has introduced rakes with high-capacity wagons to transport trucks weighing up to 57 tonnes recently.

While the first of such Ro Ro rakes was introduced from November 5, the second rake was introduced on December 3, said a release from KRCL here. These two rakes are named Chetak and Gaurav while one more rake with wagons having maximum capacity of 50 tonnes is named Garud. Garud too is undergoing modifications to enhance its capacity.

Ro Ro service was introduced between Kolad and Verna (Goa) on January 26, 1999, and was subsequently extended to Surahtkal in 2004. The service is aimed at reducing carbon footprints from trucks plying on roads, relieving drivers/ operators of tedious driving on the highways and also to save on cost of operation.

The two new rakes have 15 BRN wagons, each capable of carrying trucks up to 57 tonnes and 35 BOXN wagons each capable of carrying trucks up to 50 tonnes, the release said. Charges for trucks with weight more than 50 tonnes and up to 57 tonnes would be ₹800 per tonne plus GST.

Konkan Railway said the enhanced carrying capacity of rakes is set to benefit transporters moving heavy material, including iron and steel, marble, tiles, construction material and other heavy consignment over KRCL network.
