The four new Labour Codes notified by the Union government amount to an assault “equivalent to genocide” on the country’s workforce, All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) State general secretary K.P. Rajendran has said.
He was inaugurating a protest meeting organised by the Thrissur district committee of the Kerala Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ) on Wednesday against the implementation of the Labour Codes.
Mr. Rajendran said that while the International Labour Organisation marked its centenary with the slogan ‘Decent Work, Decent Wages,’ the Indian government had brought in a system which was “not just corporate-driven, but is one that pushes workers into modern-day slavery.” He pointed out that 29 existing Labour Laws had been scrapped and replaced with four codes without any meaningful consultation.
Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) district secretary U.P. Joseph, who delivered the keynote address, said the Centre was using clever tactics to bypass the Constitution by retaining its structure while hollowing out its fundamental spirit through measures such as the Labour Codes.
Thrissur Press Club vice-president Akshitha Raj presided.
