The Coimbatore Corporation has engaged an expert team from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras to study traffic patterns at Lanka Corner junction near Coimbatore railway station and recommend a permanent solution for congestion. Temporary measures are currently in place to regulate vehicle movement.
Initially, a roundabout was set up using sandbags, but it was later removed. Motorists reported that the configuration was restrictive, making right turns from State Bank Road to Big Bazaar Road challenging for larger vehicles. Authorities have suggested shifting the roundabout centre slightly eastwards, towards Trichy Road, to improve traffic flow. Traffic signals were subsequently introduced, though police observed longer waiting time during peak hours.
The IIT Madras team is conducting a comprehensive study using drones and other traffic-monitoring technologies to assess flow, peak-hour congestion, and safety concerns. Based on the analysis, a long-term traffic management plan will be formulated.
Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabakaran said the study covers around 15 junctions in the city. “Solutions that do not rely on signals will be tested. Some trials may not succeed. Lanka Corner, with its narrow carriageway and high traffic volume, requires more time. The study will be completed soon to implement a permanent plan,” he stated.
