Gang wars do keep Madurai district police busy. The police take all-out efforts to prevent any murders. This includes keeping a tab on movement of specific people in different areas.

But, visible policing by alert police personnel do produce desired results in preventing heinous crimes. Two such incidents have been reported in the district in the last fortnight when the police were able to prevent two possible murders.

“Our men did not leave things to chance, but did smart work and nabbed the accused much before even the targetted victims could know about the impending danger,” said Superintendent of Police B. K. Arvind.

In one of the incidents, a team of police personnel on night rounds at Pudupatti junction under Othakadai police station limits found three persons riding on a motorbike in a suspicious manner.

Just as the police tried to intercept them, they ducked the police attempt and fled the scene on the bike. After a chase for some distance, the police found the bike abandoned on the road. The trio had disappeared under the cover of darkness.

However, the police team got a back up and they did not give up the search. Their attempt bore fruit and one Hariprasad of Sikkander Chavadi was nabbed.

His confession revealed that Hariprasad was angered at two persons from Sikkander Chavadi after they beat him up in a drunken brawl before Deepavali. Hence, along with his friends, Hariprasad had planned to assault them. The friends had stolen a bike and were caught when they were planning to steal a high-speed bike. Other accused were also subsequently arrested.

In the other incident, a policeman on patrolling duty got a call about few youths speeding on motorbike with lethal weapons near Melavalavu. “That they kept creating sparks using long swords being dragged on the road,” the SP said.

Even as the police man chased them, another team of police intercepted them ahead near Thumbaipatti.

The police found that they were returning after an attempt to murder a person who had a quarrel with one Ayyanar. “Since the targetted person was not available, they could not attack him,” Mr. Arvind said.

Though vehicle check and patrolling are done all 365 days, such incidents of swift and sincere action of preventing murders encourage the police to do their work better. “Our men have been sensitised to not ignore any alerts, especially with regard to armed men,” the SP said.
