Lift operator in Chennai sentenced to 14-year-imprisonment for sexually assaulting minor girls

The Special Court in Chengalpattu for cases under POCSO Act (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act) has convicted and sentenced a 58-year-old lift operator to 14-year-imprisonment for aggravated sexual assault on two minor girls in 2023.

The court held R. Velayutham, a resident of Perumbakkam, guilty of offences under provisions of POCSO and ordered him to undergo seven years of rigorous imprisonment each in two cases for committing aggravated sexual assault on two minor girls.

According to the police, the incident occurred on October 31, 2023. Velayutham, who was working as a lift operator, sexually assaulted the minor girls at different times when they were returning home in the lift.

Based on information of the parents of the victims, two cases were registered at Semmencheri All Women Police Station under Sections 9(m) (aggravated sexual assault on a child below twelve years) 10 (Punishment for aggravated sexual assault) of POCSO ACT on October 31, 2023.

On investigation, the accused Velayutham was arrested by police on October 2023 and the Investigation was concluded promptly and final report was filed in the court against him in October 2024.

Additionally, a compensation fund of ₹2 lakh was awarded by the court to the both victims, as stipulated by the rules.
