Local body elections: over 1.08 lakh candidates file nominations, scrutiny on Saturday

When the deadline for filing nomination papers for the 2025 local body elections ended at 3 p.m. on Friday, a little over 1.08 lakh candidates have filed their papers.

According to the information released by the State Election Commission at 8 p.m. on Friday, 1,08,580 candidates have filed 1,64,427 nomination papers. Of the total number, 57,227 are female candidates, 51,352 are male and one—in Thiruvananthapuram district—is a transgender candidate.

The data is not final, the commission said.

Kerala goes to the polls in two phases on December 9 and 11.

Malappuram saw the highest number of candidates (13,595) filing their papers, followed by Thrissur (11,079), Palakkad (10,372) and Ernakulam (10,092). In all, 9,977 candidates filed their nominations in Kozhikode, 8,625 in Thiruvananthapuram, and 8,238 in Kannur. The number of candidates in the other districts are—Kasaragod (4,374), Wayanad (3,180), Idukki (4,257), Kottayam (6,276), Alappuzha (7,210), Pathanamthitta (4,164) and Kollam (7,141).

The scrutiny of the papers will be held on Saturday. November 24 (Monday) is the last date for withdrawing the nominations. Once these processes are over, the numbers will come down further.

The number of total nominations filed this year is less than that filed for the previous elections in 2020. For the 2020 polls, around 1.7 lakh candidates had filed their nominations. After the scrutiny of the papers and the deadline for withdrawal, 74,899 candidates were in the fray. In the final count, 38,593 male candidates, 36,305 female candidates and one transgender person were in the fray for the local body elections in the State which were held in three phases on December 8, 10 and 14.
