In all, 2,535 polling stations in Kerala have been designated as ‘sensitive’ for the upcoming two-phased local body polls on December 9 and 11, State Election Commissioner A. Shajahan said on Sunday.

Overall, Kannur district, which goes to the polls in Phase II on December 11, has the highest number of sensitive polling stations—1,025.

Phase I, which will see polling in seven districts, including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Alappuzha, Idukki and Thiruvananthapuram, has 480 sensitive stations. Thiruvananthapuram district has the highest number—186. Of this, 70 are in the urban areas and 116, in the rural areas.

The commission has put these polling stations under live webcast and videography as part of the security arrangements.

Mr. Shajahan warned that instances of hindering the election process, fake votes and violations of the model code of conduct (MCC) will attract stern legal action.

In all, close to 71,000 police personnel are being deployed in the two phases as part of the security arrangements.
