Minister for Commercial Taxes and Registration P. Moorthy has exhorted the officials to look for every possible avenue to augment the State Government’s revenue in the wake of the revised Goods and Services Tax (GST) by the Union Government.

Chairing a meeting held at the District Collectorate here on Thursday to review the performance of personnel of the Commercial Taxes Department, he said the performance appraisal meetings were being organised in every division of Tamil Nadu, as it was vital for augmenting the State’s revenue by calibrating personnel’s abilities. The officials from Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Thoothukudi and Kanniyakumari had been told during the meeting held here on Thursday to look for more avenues for augmenting the government’s revenue in the wake of the Centre’s revised GST.

“Since the Union Government has revised the GST slabs for various goods, the officials should search for more avenues for improving Tamil Nadu’s tax revenue,” he said.

The meeting held here on Thursday reviewed the performance of the commercial taxes officials from April 1 last to October. The meeting also elicited the officials’ suggestions for improving the commercial taxes revenue.

Commercial Taxes Department officials, who participated in the performance appraisal meeting said the minister stressed the need for improving the tax revenue by conducting surprise checks in commercial establishments and expediting the investigations against the erring companies etc. as sharing of taxes from the Central pool had come down drastically. Since the Tamil Nadu Government had been forced to run the administration with its own funds while implementing a range of welfare schemes, the officials were told to improve their performance for augmenting the State’s income through commercial tax collection, they said.

Commissioner for Commercial Taxes S. Nagarajan, District Revenue Officer M. Suganya, Additional Commissioners of Commercial Taxes Subhash Chandrabose and Parameswaran, Joint Commissioners Murugakumar and Bhanupriya participated in the meeting.
