The Madras High Court, on Monday (November 10, 2025), questioned the legality of the reported marriage between popular chef-cum-actor ‘Madhampatty’ T. Rangaraj and costume designer Joy Crizildaa in December 2023 when the latter had divorced her first husband only on July 16, 2024.
Justice N. Senthilkumar raised the question before reserving orders in a case filed by the chef to restrain the costume designer from making false, malicious and defamatory statements against him in any form of media since they disparage his personality rights.
The judge deferred the verdict after hearing elaborate arguments advanced by senior counsel S. Prabakaran on behalf of Ms. Crizildaa and senior counsel Srinath Sridevan, assisted by advocate Vijayan Subramanian, for Mr. Rangaraj on the application for interim injunction.
Filing a detailed counter affidavit, Ms. Crizildaa told the court she got married for the first time in 2018 but ended up living separately from her husband since 2000 due to matrimonial disputes. In July 2023, she got acquainted with Mr. Rangaraj through a mutual friend.
She also claimed the chef had lied to her that he had got judicially separated from his wife and therefore, the friendly acquaintance between them turned into a relationship. The costume designer claimed the chef had implored her to end her first marriage and re-marry him.
Accordingly, they both got married at Thiruveedhi Amman Temple at MRC Nagar in Chennai as per Hindu rites and customs on December 24, 2023 and began their matrimonial life in Chennai, she said. Though she got pregnant in September 2024, the chef forced her to undergo abortion under threat and coercion, she added.
Stating she was forced to undergo abortion again in December 2024, the costume designer said she put her foot down and refused to abort the foetus for the third time in April 2025 leading a discord between them. She accused the chef of turning violent and assaulting her physically.
Ms. Crizildaa apprised the court of a criminal complaint lodged by her against the chef before the police and also before the Tamil Nadu State Commission for Women and urged it to dismiss his application for interim injunction.
