With the international teams having started to arrive in Madurai city for the Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup, Madurai City Police have geared up to provide them round-the-clock security to the young players throughout their stay and travel in the city.
Players from 12 countries, along with those from India, would be staying in eight different hotels across the city.
With the recent ugly incident of Australian women cricket players facing harassment at Indore in Madhya Pradesh creating a bad image, the city police have left no stone unturned in providing heightened security for young hockey players.
“An international sports tournament coming to Madurai is a big event. We do not want to leave anything to chances,” said Madurai City Police Commissioner J. Loganathan.
The police have ensured full armed security to the players at their place of stay.
The players have been segregated from other guests at the hotels. “Separate floors have been allotted for the hockey teams. Police helpdesk has been set up at each hotel so that the teams could plan their movement outside the hotel,” he said. This is basically to make their movement easier since every team has come to a new place in the globe.
Every team would be provided armed escort from their hotel to the Race Course Stadium and back.
“Even if they want to go out for sight-seeing police bandobust would be provided,” he added.
The entry of the vehicles carrying the players into the stadium would be isolated.
Every person would be allowed into the stadium only after a thorough frisking. Door-frame metal detectors would be installed at the stadium.
Over 700 police personnel would be deployed exclusively for providing security at the stadium and movement of the teams till December 9, the Commissioner said.
