Sanitation woes
Commissioner, Madurai Corporation, is requested to look into a serious public health concern at Sathamangalam, Anna Nagar, near Cine Mini Theatres. A garbage yard and open dumping spots surround the Primary Health Centre in the heart of the area. Several hospitals and schools lie within a 200-foot radius.
Although the Corporation has installed five dustbins here, they are being used as permanent storage points for refuse brought from other parts of the city; open urination and defecation are also reported. The 60-foot road has been reduced to a 20-foot passage due to the garbage accumulation, causing heavy traffic congestion. Due to such unhygienic conditions, it becomes a breeding ground for mosquitoes and attracts stray dogs and cows.
I urge the Corporation to clear the dumping site, remove and relocate the waste, mount regular sanitation drives, prevent open defecation and animal encroachments and restore the road to its original width to ease traffic.
S. Kanagarajan,
Anna Nagar
Civic responsibility
It is disheartening to note recent reports describing Madurai as one of the dirtiest cities in the country. As residents, it is our responsibility to change this. Madurai people must cooperate with the Corporation in proper waste disposal. The civic authorities, in coordination with business associations, NGOs, and NSS volunteers from schools and colleges, could organise fortnightly clean-up drives in different areas to ensure sustained cleanliness. Instituting awards for the cleanest zone may also encourage public participation. Let us all work together to restore Madurai’s image as a clean and proud city.

Peacock protection
Peacocks are ethereally beautiful creatures that can still be seen in large numbers between Oomachikulam and Yanaimalai near Othakadai. Sadly, of late, they face the risk of extinction due to rapid urbanisation and alleged illegal hunting.
To ensure their survival and preserve the natural habitat, the Yanaimalai region and the Idayapatti hill area near Thiruvadavur may be declared as Peacock Sanctuaries. Such a step would go a long way in protecting these birds and maintaining ecological balance in the region.
