Risky roads

Whenever it rains in Madurai, the roads become hazardous to drive on. This is a result of inadequate maintenance of the drainage system, which fails to remove the water from the streets and roads effectively. The pothole-riddled roads, along with the waterlogging, significantly increase the risk of accidents. The Corporation should make an effort to address this prevailing issue for the well-being of the citizens.

Bridge chaos

The South Gate narrow bridge is the only bridge connecting Villapuram, Avaniyapuram, Jaihindpuram, the Airport and other parts of the city.

This bridge witnesses heavy traffic congestion throughout the day. There are numerous big potholes on the entire stretch of the bridge. During night hours, the situation becomes worse as one does not know where the potholes are. Moreover, share-autos are stationed in front of the bridge on both sides to carry passengers.

They cause a major traffic congestion. Reckless driving of share-autos and two-wheelers leads to accidents. The parapet walls are in a dilapidated condition that makes riding the vehicles unsafe.

Besides, accumulated sand on both sides of the bridge poses a big threat to vehicle users. The consensus among the public is that the narrow bridge must be broadened or an alternative route established to ensure public safety and smooth traffic flow. I request the authorities concerned to take immediate steps.

Insurance disparity

Railway travel insurance is optional and can be opted for during online booking on the IRCTC website or app, with a nominal premium of 45 paise per passenger, covering accidental death, injury, and related expenses. While this protects online-booked passengers, those who book at railway counters remain unprotected despite travelling under the same confirmed accommodation.

I appeal to the Railway Board and authorities to extend travel insurance facilities to counter-booked passengers as well, ensuring fairness and equal protection for all travellers.

Need for upgraded road

The four-kilometre metal road linking Alagarkoil Road and Melur Main Road via Arumbanur and Y. Kodikulam faces severe congestion. A one-kilometre stretch along the western bank of the Periyar sub-canal, between Y. Kodikulam and Melur Main Road, is too narrow to accommodate the increasing volume of traffic.

When buses and trucks pass, two-wheelers are left with little room to manoeuvre, and pedestrians face a significant risk.

If the eastern earthen road along the canal is upgraded with bitumen and properly connected to the existing road near Ayalangudi village intersection, the situation will improve considerably. I urge the authorities to consider this solution at the earliest.

Uneven road surface

The stretch from Moonrumaavadi Junction to the Surveyor Colony Signal in Madurai remains in a poor state despite being one of the most frequently used roads in the city.

Located in front of the District Police Headquarters, it serves as a key link for commuters heading towards Mattuthavani Bus Stand and Alagar Koil.

Large potholes, uneven surfaces and water stagnation have made this stretch unsafe, particularly during peak hours. Traffic congestion and minor accidents have become common.

I urge the civic authorities and the Highways Department to take up immediate repair and relaying of the road to ensure public safety.

Speaker nuisance

Residents of Naganakulam were disturbed on Friday when songs were played on high-decibel speakers from early morning until 5.30 p.m. as part of a funeral observance.

This caused inconvenience to those living nearyby. I request authorities to take necessary action against the use of high-decibel speakers.
