A ‘Maha Sabha’ being conducted across government schools and PU colleges on November 14 will be an opportunity for the teachers to make parents aware of facilities at the institutions, which will help increase the enrolment of children, said Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Narwade Vinayak Karbhari in Mangaluru on Wednesday.
Talking to reporters, Mr. Karbhari said, as per the directions of School Education and Literacy and Secondary Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa, the ‘Maha Sabha’ will be held across all government schools and PU Colleges in Dakshina Kannada.
“From institutions where there are less than 80 students all parents will be invited to the event. In institutions where there are 100 or more students, preference will be given to a little over 100 parents whose wards are in class 10.
During the event, parents will be made known about the assessment techniques, facilities at the institutions, rights of the children and about the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POSCO). “Though teachers have been doing it at the school-level, not all parents are aware of facilities, assessment, and child rights and laws. An effort is being made to reach out to all parents. We will be taking their feedback too,” he said.
Students who have excelled in curricular and co-curricular activities will be felicitated on the occasion. With this exercise, the government hopes to increase enrolment of students through word of mouth and publicity by parents, he said.
Deputy Director of Public Instructions G. Shashidhar said of the 898 government primary schools, 63 schools have less than 10 students, while 116 schools have between 11 and 20 students in the district. There were a total of 682 schools that have strength between 20 and 300. As many as 37 schools have strength between 300 and 1,000.
Of the 171 secondary schools, one school has strength less than 20, and 148 schools with strength between 20 and 200. There were 22 schools with strength between 200 and 700.
Of the three students, who dropped out, from Bantwal came back to enrol for class 10. The student’s younger brother, who dropped out of class 9, refused to return. Another student from Mangaluru South education block has moved out of State along with his parents, Mr. Shashidhar said.
