The Thiruvananthapuram Principal District and Sessions Court on Monday reserved its verdict on the anticipatory bail plea filed by Palakkad MLA Rahul Mamkootathil in connection with the second rape case registered against him.

The court granted the legislator temporary protection from arrest until the verdict is delivered on December 10. No coercive action, including arrest, can be taken against him until then.

The Crime Branch had booked Mr. Mamkootathil for allegedly raping a 23-year-old non-resident Keralite in 2023.

According to the prosecution, the legislator allegedly befriended the survivor on social media, proposed marriage and persuaded her to meet him at a homestay where the assault is said to have taken place.

Meanwhile, the special investigation team led by Assistant Inspector General, Coastal Police, G. Poonguzhali, submitted the survivor’s detailed statement along with digital evidence before the court.

In her statement, the woman reportedly stated that she was subjected to a violent assault that left her with injuries all over her body. She alleged that the legislator continued the attack despite her pleas to stop, and that she experienced panic attacks and breathing difficulties during the incident. Following the incident, he told her that he would not be able to marry her.

The survivor also alleged that the MLA attempted to contact her again, verbally abused her over the phone and visited the vicinity of her home multiple times, pressuring her to meet him. She said she refrained from coming forward earlier due to fear of the consequences.
