The Vepery police arrested a 33-year-old man for carrying out an attack on his wife on Friday.
The city police said Augustine Joshua, of Parthasarathy Street in Purasawalkam, began abusing his wife within a few days of their marriage. They frequently quarrelled. On Thursday night, Joshua assaulted her with a hammer during one such quarrel, and locked her in a room. However, she called up her sister and informed her of the incident.
Her family members rushed to her house and rescued her.
She was admitted to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital.
Based on the alert, the Vepery police arrested Joshua under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005.
