Arambakkam Police in Tiruvallur district has arrested a 26-year-old youth for allegedly beating a 44-year-old woman to death as she refused to give money to him.

The victim has been identified as Dhanam, 44, a resident of Chinna Natham Village near Gummidipoondi who was a flower vendor. On Friday evening, she was found lying dead in a pool of blood in a grove, with her face bearing several injuries.

Police recovered her body. Agitated villagers had heated arguments with the police demanding the immediate arrest of the accused. After pacifying the people, the police took the body to Government Hospital, Tiruvallur for post-mortem.

One silver cup, a mobile phone used by Dhanam and a silver ring that was left by the perpetrator at the scene were recovered and provided clues to the police to crack down on the case. Police picked one Dinesh alias Eli, 26, as the silver ring belonged to him.

Police sources said Dinesh of the same village stopped her when she was her way home on Friday, and took her mobile phone under the pretext of talking to his friend. He spoke over the phone and demanded money from her. When she refused to give the money saying that she did not have it, he pushed her down and attacked her. Then, he snatched her money purse containing ₹120, and two gram gold ear rings. Fearing that he would be caught, he beat her to death using a stone and fled the scene.
