Tension prevailed in Devara Beesanahalli in Marathahalli on Tuesday when a 45-year-old man from another community walked into a temple’s sanctum sanctorum and allegedly tried to desecrate the idol. He was caught by people tied to a tree, beaten up and later handed over to the police.

The accused runs a footwear repair shop in Devara Beesanahalli. Moments before the temple incident, he was seen near a medical shop, shouting religious slogans and striking a photo of Lord Ganesha kept there with a stick. When locals confronted him, he ran toward the nearby Venugopalaswamy Temple, shouting slogans and creating a ruckus. He allegedly entered the sanctum sanctorum wearing slippers, carrying a small bottle containing oil-like liquid and attempted to pull the idol down.

Shocked by his behaviour, temple staff and residents rushed and caught hold of the accused, tied him to a roadside tree and thrashed him before handing him over to the police. The accused, who sustained minor injuries, has been admitted to a private hospital for treatment.

The Marathahalli Police visited the spot and seized a pair of slippers, stones, and the oil bottle from the accused. The police said a detailed inquiry will be conducted after the accused is discharged from the hospital.
