The Fast Track Mahila Court here on Tuesday (November 25, 2025) sentenced a 38-year-old man to 20 years’ imprisonment for sexually assaulting and impregnating a minor girl in 2022.

According to the prosecution, the parents of a 14-year-old girl, a Class 8 dropout from Modakkurichi taluk, performed her marriage with P. Subramani, 37, of Erode, who was then residing in Salem. The marriage took place at a temple in T.N. Palayam in Gobichettipalayam taluk on March 4, 2022. Subramani sexually assaulted her. After Childline received information about the child marriage, a complaint was lodged with the All Women Police Station in Sathyamangalam. A case was registered, and Subramani, his parents, and the girl’s parents and relatives were booked. Subramani was arrested.

A medical examination revealed that the girl was four months pregnant. She told police that she had been sexually assaulted by ‘Karadi’ Selvam alias C. Selvam of Tiruvannamalai district, who had been living near her house for a year and was engaged in sugarcane cutting. He was married. Selvam was arrested on November 21, 2022. The girl, admitted to the Government Erode Medical College and Hospital in Perundurai, suffered a miscarriage.

DNA samples of the victim, Selvam, and Subramani were sent to a Chennai laboratory as directed by the court, and the results confirmed that Selvam was responsible for the pregnancy.

Judge C. Sornakumar sentenced Selvam to 20 years’ imprisonment for sexual assault and another 20 years for impregnating the minor, with the sentences to run concurrently. He was also fined ₹10,000. The court recommended ₹3 lakh compensation to the victim. Special Public Prosecutor M. Jayanthi appeared for the prosecution.
