A court here on Thursday (October 30, 2025) sentenced a 62-year-old man to life imprisonment for murdering his elder brother in 2023.
According to the prosecution, M. Ramasamy, 66, and his brother M. Shanmugam, both daily wage workers residing at Ellapalayam in Perundurai, had a long-standing dispute over a drainage channel from Ramasamy’s house that passed by Shanmugam’s residence.
On March 14, 2023, a quarrel broke out between them over the issue, during which Shanmugam assaulted Ramasamy with wooden logs. Ramasamy sustained severe injuries and was admitted to the Government Erode Medical College and Hospital at Perundurai, where he succumbed to his injuries on March 20.
Perundurai police altered the case to that of murder and arrested Shanmugam.
First Additional District and Sessions Judge S. Ezhil found Shanmugam guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment, besides imposing a fine of ₹1,000. He was later lodged in the Coimbatore Central Prison.
