A court in Tiruvottiyur has sentenced a man to imprisonment for three years and imposed a fine of ₹10,000 for obstructing police personnel from performing their duty, verbally abusing them, and assaulting them while being intoxicated.
According to police, on August 24, 2019, Sub-Inspector Ezhilan and Constable Jagan of the Manali Traffic Police were conducting a vehicle check near the MFL Junction in Manali. During the check, they stopped a two-wheeler which Manimaran was riding.
While the police men were initiating action against Manimaran for the offense, his associate, Panneerselvam alias Panneer, 50, residing at Ennore Kuppam, arrived at the scene, who also was under the influence of alcohol. He allegedly abused the officers obscenely, physically assaulted them, issued death threats, and obstructed them from performing their duty.
Following a complaint filed by the Sub-Inspector of Traffic, a case was registered at the Manali Police Station, and an investigation was carried out. After completion of the investigation, a final report was filed before the Thiruvottiyur Court.
During the trial, the prosecution proved the charges against the accused. On Monday, the Tiruvottiyur Court convicted Panneerselvam and sentenced him to three years of imprisonment along with a fine of ₹10,000.
