BJP leader Manikanth Rathod was arrested at Narayanpur village in Jewargi taluk of Kalaburagi district late on Thursday night on the charge of attempt to murder, following a dramatic turn of events during a protest.

According to police sources, it all began when Rathod, along with a group of villagers, staged the protest in Narayanpur village demanding that the authorities arrest and extern Rasheed Mutya, a local traditional herbal medicine practitioner.

Rathod and the protesters said that Rasheed’s activities have been suspicious and called for immediate action against him.

The protest created high drama in the village and the situation escalated when unidentified individuals hurled stones at Rasheed Mutya’s vehicle while he was leaving the village in a car, causing significant damage.

The car driver sustained injuries in the attack.

Based on a complaint and preliminary investigation, the police registered a case of attempt to murder against Rathod, holding him responsible for instigating the violence.

He was taken into police custody late on Thursday and produced before a local court on Friday only to be remanded him in judicial custody.

A case has been registered at Nelogi Police Station.
