Several parts of the central districts received light to moderate showers on Monday after heavy overnight rainfall across the region, especially the Cauvery delta.
Inundation of standing thaladi paddy crops was reported in many places in the delta region, especially in the coastal areas. Although the intensity of rainfall came down during the day on Monday, farmers are keeping their fingers crossed with more heavy rainfall predicted over the next few days.
“There was widespread heavy overnight rainfall and waterlogging is reported in low lying areas along the coast in the delta region. Thaladi crops, which are 10 to 30 days old, will be badly hit if the heavy rain continued over the next few days,” said Cauvery Dhanapalan, president of Tamil Nadu Vivasaya Sangankalin Kootiyyakam.
Though there is no major damage to the crop as yet, waterlogging is reported in places where there is no proper drainage, said V.Jeevakumar, vice-president, Tamil Nadu Vivasaya Thozhilalar Sangam, Thanjavur.
On Tuesday, overcast conditions prevailed across the region, bringing down the day-time temperature sharply. Parts of the delta received moderate showers during the day.
