The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), in collaboration with the Northern Railway, launched the ‘Mosquito Terminator Train’ on Friday as part of its campaign to control vector-borne diseases in the Capital.

Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh flagged off the special train from the New Delhi railway station. Equipped with a power sprayer mounted on a wagon, the train will spray anti-larval chemicals across a 50–60 metre radius on both sides of the railway tracks. According to a statement released by the MCD, the power sprayer will cover difficult-to-reach areas around the tracks, where waterlogging often creates mosquito breeding sites. “With this initiative, we aim to reduce diseases like dengue, malaria, and chikungunya at the source,” said Mr. Singh.

Lower dengue cases

MCD Commissioner Ashwani Kumar called the drive a major public health initiative. “Cleanliness and mosquito eradication drives are being carried out in mission mode, but public participation is equally important. Citizens must ensure water does not stagnate in or around their homes,” he said.

The campaign will run till the end of September and is expected to bring relief to lakhs of residents, as per the press release.

Mr. Kumar also added that dengue cases reported so far this year are already lower compared to last year.

According to MCD figures, Delhi has recorded 354 dengue cases up to last week this year, slightly lower than the 374 cases reported during the same period in 2024. However, malaria cases have shown an uptick, with 165 reported so far in 2025 compared to 155 in the corresponding period last year.
