Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta led a roadshow in support of BJP candidate Anita Jain for the Shalimar Bagh-B ward on Monday, as candidates from all major parties filed their nominations for the November 30 Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) byelections. The filings came a day after the BJP, Congress, and AAP announced their list of 12 candidates for the upcoming bypolls.

The State Election Commission confirmed that a total of 133 nominations were filed. The byelections will be held across 12 wards that fell vacant following the election of their representatives to the Assembly.

The current number of BJP councillors in the MCD house stands at 116, AAP at 98, Indraprastha Vikas Party at 15, Congress at 8, and one Independent.

Addressing supporters during the roadshow, Ms. Gupta stated that the BJP’s goal was to continue the city’s development work. “We want every ward in Delhi to be neat and clean. We will contest all 12 wards with the blessings of the people and with an ambition to serve the public,” she said.

Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva said the bypolls would help “strengthen the resolve of Delhi Badlo, Delhi Sanwaro”. The BJP has fielded eight women candidates among its nominees.

While scrutiny of nomination papers will take place on November 12, withdrawals are likely to be made until November 15.

Following the 2022 unification and delimitation, the MCD now comprises 250 wards. In the 2022 MCD polls, the AAP had won a majority with 134 seats, followed by the BJP with 104 and the Congress with eight. However, after defections and political changes earlier this year, the BJP regained control of the Corporation, while some AAP councillors later formed the IVP.
